This is the potential timeline I am thinking of following for the progression of my signature project:
September: Get mechanics of project worked out (making website, google doc, etc.), and start researching different designs/buildings. October: Interview sister about what living is like for her and her family of four and start thinking about how big the apartment should be and what the essential features are. (Think about the function of each piece of furniture and if it is needed in an apartment or not). November: Start building model. Talk to mentor about the interview and think about what sister said to help lay out the floor plan. Also continue to research. December: Continue to build model. Work on building furniture. Get in touch with sister to talk about the model and if she think it is effective. Maybe think about adding another element (ex. eco-friendly or multiple models). Continue to talk with mentor. January: Work on model and try to integrate other elements into project. Continue talking with mentor and researching different design elements. February: Work on model and talk with sister to see if she has any advice or changes she thinks I should make. Continue to work on the development of furniture. Should be at least half-way done with project. March: Continue to work on project and develop last parts of the apartment. Talk to sister and mentor to see if I am still on track. April: Work on finishing touches of project and begin thinking about how I would present the project. Write letters of thanks to those who helped in the project process. May: Review project and get ready to present project for signature day. Think about what my greatest takeaways are and what I learned.

Hello! My name is Kaili and I attend the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York. I’m going to be working on a signature project over the course of the school year that consists of creating an online model of a more efficient living space. I choose this project because populations are increasing rapidly while city space stays the same. Many people feel apartments are too expensive and they do not satisfy their needs. Lack of space drives some people out of cities even if that is where they want to live. To counteract the issue of apartment space I am exploring the possibilities of being more space efficient. I also choose this signature project based of my interests. Some of my interests are more music focused as I play flute and harp in orchestras inside and outside of school; however, my interests related to this project are in physics and architecture. This project would allow me to look at the different architectural design elements that I might not normally explore in school. By the end of the year I will have a 3D model of my design on the online program known as sketch up. |
