Since I last posted, I have working on trying to model what I imagine. However, I have hit roadblocks in modeling. I realized I have the old version of sketchup and some of the features of sketchup I want to use, such as 3D warehouse, require the update to function. Therefore I went to the sketchup website to try to try download the new version, but I was having trouble because I wasn't sure of the version number or all of the pieces needed for the pro-version. I also tried downloading pieces from the 3D warehouse from the website (as compared downloading it directly from the application) but it wouldn't download the warehouse as it also needs to be the updated version. I am currently working on trying to get the newer version, but if that doesn't work I will have to figure out how to do all the modeling without the 3D warehouse.

After creating my design on paper, I decided to create the same design on the computer in the application (SketchUp) that I will be using. You will see the photo looks a little different than the last post as I changed the design a little after talking with my mentor as we felt it could be improved. Originally I had the kitchen on the left side, but as we looked at my model, we realized that it would be better if the kitchen was on the right so that it could open up into the open living space. Some other things I was considering was the storage space and need for multiple bedrooms. What is not pictured but what I was thinking about was creating a loft directly above the master bedroom so everyone could have their own privacy when they're alone. I was also thinking of creating a storage unit as loft above the front part of the house (also not depicted). The problem potentially with this is that then the apartment might feel small as that would detract space from the ceilings and thus make the apartment feel small. However, on the other side I was thinking of making the floor in the open space a storage unit so you could keep seasonal stuff stored away. Since the interview with my sister, I have been talking with my on campus mentor to look at limitations for my project to help me narrow the conditions in which I'm working. Originally I thought that more freedom would allow me to do what I want in the way I wanted to, but what I realized that sometimes with too much freedom I struggle to create a plan as I don't even know where to start. With this in mind, I contacted my sister again to create a hypothetical budget for a family of four just starting out. We were able to work out a budget of $1,500 dollars a month. Then, I looked online to find reasonable apartments within that budget to create an estimation of how much space she would have in the current city she lives in. What I found was a 1016 ft space for $1150 a month, which allows for extra savings each month or money for renovations. The second step after finding an estimated space was to create a design. For that, I researched design models in a small space and created a model I liked. Something I tried to keep was their need for different bedrooms and lots of extra space in an open forum. Another piece I considered was where the kitchen was and that it opens into the dining space, allowing for more family bonding. I also tried to consider the need for storage, so I tried to find ways to add more storage as well in spaces around the walls in a loft. Here is an image of the design plan I have created. For my interview I had met with my sister to ask her about how she feels about the house she lives in. My goal was to consider the other aspects of housing that I would not have thought of as I have never had to think about the convenience of the kitchen nor the utility of the garage. My greatest takeaway from meeting with my sister was learning about the importance of the kitchen. My sister had mentioned that space in multiple questions, saying that was where most of the family spent time together, one of the three rooms she could not live without, and even the one space she would save above all the other rooms. This means I should definitely include a kitchen space in my design, whereas before I had considered not really having one, or at least a really small one. Another thing my sister mentioned was the idea of open space. Many times when she had guests over it was important for them to have a space to entertain people where everyone was comfortable. Open space also gives the effect of a bigger home, which is great when you have guests over and even just for your family to enjoy. While my sister mentioned having enough rooms for privacy, that was something that realized was really important as people need time to themselves to unwind and just enjoy the peace. Overall my sister made some really nice points and I was able to understand what she felt was important for a family home. While I continue with the project I will still be able to talk to her and get feedback.

From this I was able to remember and remind myself of how different parts of sketchup could be used. Here are some visuals of what my projects had looked like. (You can also look under the images page to see more pictures). These models gave me experience with the program and gave me some ideas in how to use the space. This is the potential timeline I am thinking of following for the progression of my signature project:
September: Get mechanics of project worked out (making website, google doc, etc.), and start researching different designs/buildings. October: Interview sister about what living is like for her and her family of four and start thinking about how big the apartment should be and what the essential features are. (Think about the function of each piece of furniture and if it is needed in an apartment or not). November: Start building model. Talk to mentor about the interview and think about what sister said to help lay out the floor plan. Also continue to research. December: Continue to build model. Work on building furniture. Get in touch with sister to talk about the model and if she think it is effective. Maybe think about adding another element (ex. eco-friendly or multiple models). Continue to talk with mentor. January: Work on model and try to integrate other elements into project. Continue talking with mentor and researching different design elements. February: Work on model and talk with sister to see if she has any advice or changes she thinks I should make. Continue to work on the development of furniture. Should be at least half-way done with project. March: Continue to work on project and develop last parts of the apartment. Talk to sister and mentor to see if I am still on track. April: Work on finishing touches of project and begin thinking about how I would present the project. Write letters of thanks to those who helped in the project process. May: Review project and get ready to present project for signature day. Think about what my greatest takeaways are and what I learned. Hello! My name is Kaili and I attend the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York. I’m going to be working on a signature project over the course of the school year that consists of creating an online model of a more efficient living space. I choose this project because populations are increasing rapidly while city space stays the same. Many people feel apartments are too expensive and they do not satisfy their needs. Lack of space drives some people out of cities even if that is where they want to live. To counteract the issue of apartment space I am exploring the possibilities of being more space efficient. I also choose this signature project based of my interests. Some of my interests are more music focused as I play flute and harp in orchestras inside and outside of school; however, my interests related to this project are in physics and architecture. This project would allow me to look at the different architectural design elements that I might not normally explore in school. By the end of the year I will have a 3D model of my design on the online program known as sketch up. |
